Session 12 Innovation and Life – From the Fundamental Research of Graphene to its Industrial Application

New materials technology has become one of the most important and fastest developing science and technology in the contemporary and next century, which is an important part of modern high technology, as well as the basis and precursor of high-tech industrial development. The successful development and application of most high technology begin with a breakthrough in new materials.

The session “Innovation and Life – From the Fundamental Research of Graphene to its Industrial Application” focuses on the industrial application and prospect of Graphene and other new materials, comprehensively analyzing driving and penetrating effect of which on innovative technology and traditional industries. This session was moderated by Zheng Qiang, Distinguished Professor of Ministry of Education for Chang Jiang Scholars Programs, The Director of MOE Key Laboratory of Macromolecular Synthesis and Functionalization, Professor of Taiyuan University of Technology. Norbert Fabricius, Secretary-General of IEC/TC 113 Nanotechnology for electrotechnical products and systems, Chairman of Technical committee, International Graphene Product Certificate Center delivered a speech, pointing out that at present China is one of the countries with the highest level of activity in the field of Graphene standardization. Konstantin Novoselov, Nobel Laureate in Physics, General Director, National Space Science Center (NSSC) Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences; Kang Feiyu, Dean of Shenzhen Graduate School of Tsinghua University; Gao Chao, Qiushi Distinguished Professor of Zhejiang University, Founder and Chief Scientist of Hangzhou Gaoxi Technology Co., LTD; Li Yichun, Member of the National New Material Indus-try Development Advisory Committee, spoke on the basic research and industrial application of Graphene respectively.

In the forum, Konstantin Novoselov shared the research history on the wide range of applications and innovations of Graphene composites in the fields of textiles, sports goods, electronic products, automobiles, etc. He gave an in-depth explanation on the basic research, industrial applications, and industrial standardization of the 2D materials, focusing on the analysis of the characteristics of the 2D crystalline materials and the prospects of the product applications other than Graphene. He believed that in the future, cutting-edge material design will provide important solutions for important global issues such as smart cities, progressive healthcare, water treatment, artificial intelligence, electronic communications, etc. to promote science and technology innovation.

Kang Feiyu focused on the design, preparation and application of Graphite, Graphene and other carbon materials for energy storage. Carbon materials are widely used in various types of batteries by virtue of their versatile structure and excellent conductivity, which play a key role in large-scale energy storage, energy conversion and industrial development. Gao Chao mainly shared the research on Graphene oxide macro-assemblies and the breakthrough extraction results of monolayer Graphene oxide, as well as the related industrial applications such as one-dimensional Graphene fibres, two-dimensional membrane, three-dimensional aerogels, and multi-dimensional non-woven fabrics.

During the roundtable discussion, Yin Lijun, General Manager of Asia Pacific Region, International Graphene Product Certification Center(IGCC), analyzed the growing demand for Graphene product certification in the industry and market from the supply side and the consumption side, and pointed out the important role of certification in the transformation and upgrading of enterprises to support the development of the real economy as a high-end productive service industry. Li Yichun analyzed the global Graphene industry layout as a whole, and at the same time, he mentioned that it was needed to pay attention to the inheritance and innovation of enterprises and young generation, and focus on the "future research and development". Currently, the Graphene industry has gradually matured, and with the deepening of the industrialization process, the global Graphene industry will usher in a new round of development.
