Session 7 Innovation and Life – The Globalization of Traditional Chinese Medicine

As a treasure of Chinese culture and a unique medical resource, Chinese medicine has made significant contributions to the fight against major global diseases. With the development of the times, Chinese medicine is also facing historic opportunities in the process of inheritance and development changes, and the collision and exchange with Western medicine will help promote the long-term development of Chinese medicine.

The session “Innovation and Life – The Globalization of Traditional Chinese Medicine” was moderated by Zhang Xiaoying, producer and host of the health programme of Guangzhou Radio and Television Station, and Xue Qingguo, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Qingdao Committee and Vice Mayor of Qingdao, delivered a keynote speech in the session. Wang Yitao, Chair Professor and Director, State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine, University of Macau; Zou Xu, Doctoral supervisor of Guangzhou University of TCM, Famous expert of TCM in Guangdong Province; and Leong man chon, Vice President of Macao Traditional Chinese Medicine Association, shared their views on the topic of how to promote Chinese medicine to benefit people's lives and go globally.

The internationalization of Chinese medicine is inseparable from the exchange of Chinese and Western cultures, and the biggest obstacle to the internationalization of Chinese medicine is the determination and export of standards, "why acupuncture can be recognized abroad, because acupuncture points are a clear standard, which can be understood more easily", replied Zou Xu in the discussion session about the difficulty of export. How to transform the knowledge and concepts of Chinese medicine into a medical culture that is acceptable and understandable to Western cultures has become an urgent problem for the internationalization of Chinese medicine. Macao, a city with a deep fusion of Chinese and Western cultures, has become a high-quality platform for the internationalization of TCM, and provides a large number of talents for the internationalization of TCM every year, who have a basic knowledge of Portuguese and English, which will provide a good foundation for the export of TCM culture. Therefore, Macao is the most mentioned city by the participants of this forum.

The pneumonia epidemic that swept across the globe in 2020 brought a deep and painful disaster to the world, but also demonstrated the powerful role of Chinese medicine in the fight against major diseases. Zou Xu, Director of C6 Ward in Leishenshan Hospital, introduced the audience to the significant role of acupuncture in the treatment of pneumonia, demonstrating the remarkable effect of acupuncture, a traditional treatment technique of Chinese medicine.
