BFA to Hold Its 2022 Annual Conference on April 20-22 The 2022 Annual Conference of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) is to be held on April 20-22 at Boao, Hainan Province of China. Mr. Tang noted that according to the newly launched Global Innovation Index (GII) 2020 by WIPO, there is a gradual eastward shift in the cluster of innovation as a group of Asian economies - notably China, India, the Philippines and Viet Nam - have advanced considerably in the innovation ranking over the years. In particular, Asia-based applicants accounted for more than half of PCT applications filed in 2019. Asia is moving towards the centre of innovation and creation.

Mr. Tang pointed out that China retains the l4th place, having climbed to the GII top 15 last year, establishing itself as an innovation leader as the only middle-income economy in the GII top 30 for many years. China ranks high in important metrics including patents, utility models, trademarks, industrial designs and quality of higher education, hosting 17 of the top science and technology clusters worldwide - with Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou taking the 2nd place, to which the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, has brought valuable opportunities and innovation resources.

WIPO sees great future in China’s development of innovation, and is confident that China’s strategy of building an innovation-driven economy and commitment to enhance IP protection will bring new impetus to China’s IP undertakings and the cooperation with WIPO.

Amid a new round of scientific and technological revolution, innovation and creativity have increasingly become the primary driving force for the development of all countries in the world. It is worth noting that, the role of scientific and technological innovation in curbing the spreading of the COVID-19 pandemic has shown its incomparable strength. As an indispensable component of the innovation ecosystem, IP is playing a more and more important role in stimulating scientific and technological innovation as well as promoting economic recovery.
Mr. Zhao Houlin, ITU Secretary-General addressed the 1st International Science, Technology and Innovation Forum On November 10, the First Conference of International Science, Technology and Innovation Forum of Boao Forum for Asia opened in Macau. Mr. Zhao Houlin, ITU Secretary-General joined online and delivered a congratulatory message to this conference.

Mr. Zhao commended China’s remarkable achievements in science, technology and innovation (STI), notably in 5G technology, Beidou Navigation Satellite System and Tianwen 1 Mars probe. In the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, 5G technology, among other latest STI achievements have unleased tremendous potential. Established as central to the country’s overall development plans, STI will usher in a new era of development. As active players in the international arena, Chinese STI workers have continuously contributed to the international STI development with Chinese wisdom and Chinese solutions, facilitating international cooperation and joint development. ITU commended China for its continuous support for and contribution to STI development across the world.

Mr. Zhao appreciated the relevance of ISTIF sessions to science, technology and innovation, which are areas that remain essential to the wellbeing of mankind and economic development. In line with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, the ISTIF sessions serve the purpose of empowering sustainable development worldwide.

since the 21st century, the world has witnessed unprecedented intensification and dynamism in science,technology and innovation, and a new round of sci-tech revolution and industrial transformation is profoundly changing the world. However, the world is still confronted with many economic, social and environmental problems and challenges. STI are powerful means to address these problems and challenges and important forces to promote sustainable development of the world. Countries and regions around the world consider innovation promotion and deepening of international sci-tech exchanges and cooperation as significant means to enhance independent innovation capabilities and internationalcompetitiveness. This poses new requirements and challenges to global sci-tech governance, and thus the rules and systems need to be reshaped and improved.

Chinese President Xi Jinping pointed out that science and technology is the primary productive force and innovation is the first driving force leading development. Facing the opportunities and challenges of world economic and social development, developing countries represented by China adhere to pursuing the path of independent innovation and demonstrate their innovative strength in a number of sci-tech fields, gradually becoming significant global innovation powers.

At present, Boao Forum for Asia is at a time of reform, innovation and carrying forward the cause pioneered by predecessors and forging ahead into the future. Focusing on Asia and facing the world, BFA has always maintained its role as an economic forum. At the same time, it has kept abreast of the times and actively expanded to new economic forms and cutting-edge international topics such as health, science, technology and innovation, education, culture and media. Under the circumstances, aiming to build a comprehensive and high-level dialogue and cooperation platform in the fields of sci-tech innovation for the political, business and academic communities, BFA has decided to hold the International Science, Technology and Innovation Forum to better promote international exchanges and cooperation in STI fields, advance the building of a new framework of global governance of science and technology, and contribute to the fulfillment of the 2030 Agenda for SDGs of the United Nations.
